The Body Keeps the Score - But It Can Also Let Go
Understanding trauma and why safety matters in healing
If you've ever felt like your reactions don’t make sense -freezing up in a meeting, snapping at someone you love, or feeling exhausted by things that shouldn’t feel overwhelming -you’re not alone.
Trauma isn't always about a single dramatic event. Sometimes it's the accumulation of stress over time. Sometimes it's not what happened, but what didn’t -like not feeling safe, seen, or supported.
When we experience something that overwhelms our ability to cope, our body often remembers -even if our mind moves on.
This is why you might feel tension in your chest, a pit in your stomach, or your whole system shutting down, even when things seem “fine.”
As trauma therapist Bessel van der Kolk said, “The body keeps the score.”
But what’s often missing is the second half of that sentence: the body can also let go.
In trauma-informed counselling, we go slowly. We don’t rush into painful memories. Instead, we create safety first - through grounding tools, gentle pacing, and moments of choice and control.
You don’t have to relive everything to heal.
Together, we might work with calming techniques, memory reconsolidation (like FasterEFT or tapping), body awareness, and narrative approaches that honour your experience without re-traumatising.
I hold space for you to feel steady, safe, and resourced - so that any exploration of the past feels anchored in the present.
You are not broken. Your body has been protecting you.
When it’s ready, it can begin to release what it no longer needs to carry.
