When Soothing Becomes Struggle: A Gentle Look at Addiction

Spinning image

Addiction can take many forms - alcohol, substances, food, gambling, shopping, screen use, or pornography. It often begins as a way to cope, to self-soothe, or to escape overwhelming feelings. But over time, what once felt like a lifeline can become something that keeps us stuck, disconnected, or ashamed.

In therapy, we explore the story beneath the behaviour. What’s this habit been helping you manage? What pain is it trying to numb, or what need is it trying to meet?

Addiction isn’t a failure of willpower. It’s often a response to stress, trauma, disconnection, or unmet needs. When we meet it with compassion - not judgment - we create space to understand its function, loosen its grip, and gently begin to heal.

For many people, this includes navigating shame or secrecy - especially around things like porn use, which can feel difficult to talk about. You're not alone, and this is a space where nothing needs to be hidden. Together, we can explore what feels out of balance and support you to rebuild trust in yourself.

How I work

What to expect

In our sessions, we’ll work together to:

Understand the emotional and behavioural patterns behind the addiction
Explore safer ways to manage stress, emotions, and discomfort
Rebuild a sense of agency, connection, and choice
Support healthy relationships with yourself and others
Move at a pace that feels safe and respectful of your journey

You are not your addiction. There’s more to your story—and together, we can begin to uncover it.

For Young People: When It Feels Hard to Stop

Sometimes we find ourselves turning to things - drinking, vaping, porn, scrolling, gaming - when everything feels too much. It might help you feel better for a little while, or make things quieter in your head. But then it gets harder to stop. You’re not sure how it started, and you’re not sure how to ask for help.

What you’re doing makes sense. It's a response to something inside that feels hard, painful, or confusing. And you don’t have to carry it alone.

You don’t need to have it all figured out. You don’t even need to be ready to stop. We can start by just talking—about what’s going on for you, what’s helping, and what’s hurting.

What we might explore together:

What this behaviour is helping you cope with
Why stopping feels hard (and why that’s okay)
New ways to handle big feelings and stress
How to feel less alone and more like yourself again
What it means to be kind to yourself, even in the mess

This is a space without shame or pressure - just a chance to get curious about what’s really going on underneath.

You deserve support. Book a free 20 minute kōrero to see if this feels like the right place for you.
