Understanding Trauma vs. Stress
Why your body might still be reacting, even when the hard part is over
Most of us have heard the word “trauma” more often in recent years - but it’s still often misunderstood. Many people minimise their experiences, saying things like:
“It wasn’t that bad.”
“Other people have it worse.”
“I should be over it by now.”
But trauma isn’t about the event alone — it’s about what happens inside us.
So, what’s the difference between stress and trauma?
Stress is your body’s natural response to a challenge. It might feel uncomfortable — racing heart, worry, short temper — but it generally passes when the situation resolves.
Trauma happens when something overwhelms your ability to cope. It leaves a lasting imprint on your nervous system. You might seem “fine” on the outside but still feel anxious, shut down, hyper-alert, or emotionally numb long after the event is over.
Trauma isn’t always dramatic or visible.
It can come from sudden shocks or repeated small hurts. It can happen when your boundaries are crossed, when you're not believed, or when you’ve had to keep going without support.
Signs your body might be holding trauma:
Feeling constantly on edge or emotionally flat
Trouble sleeping or focusing
Avoiding people, places, or memories
Strong reactions that feel out of proportion
Feeling disconnected from your body or emotions
These are not personal flaws.
They are signs your nervous system is doing its best to protect you - even if the danger is no longer there.
Trauma-informed therapy offers:
A space that honours your pace - no pressure to “go deep” before you’re ready
Gentle tools (like grounding, tapping, breathwork) to help your body feel safer
Conversations that don’t minimise your experience - or rush your healing
Recognition that healing is relational: it happens in safe, respectful connection
If you’ve ever wondered why certain things still affect you so deeply - even years later - it doesn’t mean you’re broken.
It means your body remembers.
But it can also learn to feel safe again.
